The trade submitted 386 quality wines from Europe to the Expovina Wine Trophy 2022. These wines reflect the offerings in the Swiss market, which is dominated by Italy, followed by France and Spain.
At the top of the podium, a youthful Nero d’Avola from Sicily takes center stage, bursting with flavors of cherries and berries. Taking the honorable positions in the north with the 2018 vintage: the Amarone captivates the palate with notes of Amarena cherries, while the Nebbiolo from Piedmont delights with toasty aromas and a structured profile.

The south of France continues to shine, just like it did last year, with its aromatic and spicy grape varieties. Grenache, Mourvèdre, and the Mediterranean climate greet us once again. And of course, Syrah is always present among the top 3. It's a delightfully peppery celebration for the nose and palate.

A total of 26 red wines from Portugal were submitted to the competition. Just like in 2021, representatives from the Douro and Alentejo regions take the top spots. The leader, crafted from 25 different red grape varieties from very old vines, claims the 1st place. The 2nd place goes to a pure Syrah representative from Alentejo.

Spain entered the competition with 102 red wines, with the regions of Rioja and Altkastilien once again taking the lead. The interplay of grape varieties surrounding Tempranillo continues to captivate. The leader emerges in a classic fashion, blended with Graciano. In the second Rioja, seven varieties come together.

Experience rarities and top wines! Discover the finest white wines of the 2021 vintage from the Romandy and German-speaking Switzerland. The red wines primarily come from the 2020 and 2019 vintages. A total of 742 Swiss wines were submitted, including 325 red wines and 274 white wines. Valais leads with 286 wines, followed by German-speaking Switzerland (169), Vaud (102), and Ticino (87). While Chasselas and Pinot Noir receive recognition, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Merlot, and especially Syrah are gaining importance.

A total of 56 red wines from the New World were submitted. Impressively, the highest-rated ones were bold crus from Argentina, Chile, and Australia. Leading the pack is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec from Mendoza. The import of bottled red wine from overseas saw a remarkable growth of over 20% compared to 2020. Argentina alone delivered around 3.6 million bottles in 2021, with Chile closely following with nearly 1.8 million bottles. Australia, on the other hand, contributed a little over 800,000 bottles to the trade.

Swiss producers submitted a total of 30 Blancs de Noirs, with 13 alone coming from the Ticino region and eleven from the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The Ticinese proved to be the masters of this category with their top three entries. It seems that Merlot is truly exceptional when it comes to vinification in Bianco.

The organic wine scene has completely shed its alternative image and now represents an increasingly high-quality wine production in a holistic ecosystem without synthetic pesticides. The family-owned company Fernand Cina SA in Salgesch wins the Exhibitor Prize 2022. Brothers Manfred and Damian Cina have been running the family business for 30 years. Both have studied viticulture and oenology. The Exhibitor Prize is awarded to the participant of the competition who has achieved the highest average score among all exhibitors of the 67th Expovina or the 16th Expovina Primavera with three of their award-winning wines. The prize is endowed with 3000 Swiss francs.
